The Great Gatsby is often seen as a critique of the American Dream, which is the idea that anyone can achieve success and prosperity through hard work, determination, and perseverance. The character of Jay Gatsby is the embodiment of the American Dream, having risen from humble origins to become a wealthy and successful man. However, the novel suggests that the American Dream is ultimately an illusion and that the pursuit of wealth and status can lead to moral decay and corruption. Gatsby's obsession with Daisy, for example, is a reflection of his desire to achieve the American Dream, but ultimately leads to his downfall. Similarly, the characters of Tom and Daisy are shown to be deeply flawed and selfish, using their wealth and status to manipulate and control those around them.

Scott Fitzgerald displays the American dreams with several characters such as; George Wilson, Jay Gatsby, and Nick Carraway. The American dream is possible to accomplish, but not everyone can be successful in having the actual dream of a family, a good career, and happiness.

In the novel The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, there are many important themes that help develop the meaning of the work as a whole. The most important and relevant theme throughout the novel would be the American dream. Jay Gatsby born as James Gatz came from a midwestern family that wasn't wealthy. Gatsby came into his own money which made him West Egg (pg. 98). When he was a soldier he met Daisy and that is when he wanted to be rich and have a lavish lifestyle because he liked Daisy and she was born into money.
The American Dream is a goal placed on the people of America. This dream is especially noticeable in the 1920s when businesses were skyrocketing and nationalism formed from the pride of Americans. F. Scott Fitzgerald proves this dream to be false, later leading to the demise of his characters in The Great Gatsby. Each character represents a new unfulfilled goal, making the dream present as a lie. Everyone has impractical expectations such as thinking they can become wealthy quickly and can climb social ladders, rekindle love in an instant and many more and that is almost impossible to reach, showing that the American dream is unachievable.
