Ever heard of Grant Wood and his creative paintings? He is well known for, his painting, The American Gothic (1930) was important to art and the history of art. This painting is well-known and often parodied by using dog faces, Muppets, Lego heads, cardboard cutouts and many others. This painting may seem as a joke but it surely is not. This painting has more meaning than most he incorporates certain symbols and realistic features that relates the paintings to his life. The most important painting of them all is The American Gothic because it has a piece of history within the painting and it is aged by the look of the clothing. He painted portraits of true American art that were simple but he put meaning behind them and also added objects within in the painting that generally did not go together, like the pitchfork in The American Gothic. Symbols are used within his paintings for example in The American Gothic, he choose items such as the pitchfork, the window, the farmhouse, his sister and dentist. Not all of his paintings are what the image portrays for example in The American Gothic, he was captivated by a beautiful farm house but the two individuals featured in the painting were never at this location. Where did the pitchfork come from? Plus, they were not a couple, one was their family dentist and the other one was his sister which who was dressed in the type of clothing his mother would wear. We can tell this because if compared to the portrait of The Woman with Plants, his sister seems to be wearing a similar outfit as the woman portrayed as his mother. The main theme of The American Gothic was realism because he kept the painting realistic to real life. We can tell this by the clothing worn on his sister within his painting. He also can show the theme being realistic by showing their faces not be smiling due to the figures in the painting look depressed or not very happy.
