People used strong effort to keep women’s sports limited when they wanted to be competitive; that wouldn’t last long (Bell). Women took part in the Olympics of 1900 for the first time. Only 22 women competed and were permitted to participate in golf and tennis (Feminist Majority Foundation). Later in the 1920’s a very stereotypical view was developed towards women and their desire to participate in sports. Their participation became “unfeminine” and “selfish”, and not to mention the fact that all athletic women were accused of lesbianism (Bell).

Cooky argues that participating in sports does not take away a woman’s femininity, despite many societal stereotypes, a woman does not have to choose between being feminine and engaging in a sport. Rather, sports require even more maintenance that surpasses the one needed to maintain a woman’s femininity. When covering women in sports, many sports reporters choose to focus on the “‘heterosexiness’ of the athletes more than their performances” (Cooky 98). Women who choose to participate in vigorous physical activities and resist engaging in activities to produce their feminine bodies are seen as masculine. This negative discourse around women in sports provided another example of how SI for women serves as an outlet for women to participate in physical activity.

They also studied recreational activity in 41 public parks in four different states…. but only 10% of those playing competitive team sports were women. Due to the troubling stereotype, women do not get nearly as much recognition as athletes as males do. Many female athletes are not recognized because of the constant battle between the male sport. Even the most popular female athletes are told they’ll never make as far as male athletes in the sport. One of the most popular female athletes, Serena Williams, constantly deals with being compared to male athletes. “when tennis great John McEnroe recently claimed that women’s champion Serena Williams wouldn’t even be a “top 700” men’s player, his controversial comment made headlines on sports shows and beyond”(Chaffee).
Some feel that transgender athletes have the right to participate in sports since it is against their human rights to prohibit them. Transgender people are heavily discriminated against and deserve an equal chance, however, as of now transgender athletes competing in the opposite sex sports causes conflict. There are many factors that must be considered when allowing transgender women to participate in women’s sports, for example safety and equality for female athletes. The involvement of trans rights in sports will always be a battle between inclusion and safety. It’s not about women mirroring the success of male athletes, it’s about allowing women in sports to compete on the same
Women athletes and women workers do not get the recognition they deserve. Men especially, look down upon women when it comes to their appearances, their knowledge and a women's physical and mental strength. In certain cases, a woman loses out on a job in the sports industry because she is exactly a woman. A male trainer can refuse to train women because of the parts her body has. Men and women have grown up in a world with the mindset that women know less than men when it comes to sports.
Sports should not be based on whether you are more interested in girls or guys sports; it should be based on which sport brings in more revenue and has the most participation
The sport domain has been traditionally considered an exclusive masculine field. Historically, women could not take part in sport until 1900 and they were allowed to join sports that did not provide physical contact or strain. Nowadays, although females can take part in every sport activity, gender stereotypes in sport still exist (Friedricks & Eccles, 2005). The persistence of gender stereotypes in sport could determine a phenomenon known as stereotype threat (Steele and Aronson, 1995; Steele, 1997; Steele, Spencer & Aronson, 2002). Stereotype threat consists in a suboptimal performance within a task related to a judgment dimension along which that particular social group is “known” to be “weak”.

It is a well known certainty that even in the current 21st century, the reality is that women in general still experience difficulty and discrimination from the conventional gender norms that hinder with their engagement in sports. Women and men compete in separate events in all sporting disciplines apart from Equestrian competitions and in mixed doubles teams in Badminton, Tennis and Ice Skating. My essay will look at the different arguments around whether or not women and men should be allowed to compete together in sport. One of the most compelling arguments for why women and men should be allowed to compete against each other is that in today’s society in which women and men are equal and can do the same things, they should be given the same opportunities in sport.
