We all know the dress code very well, preventing us from wearing what we want and letting our real style shine through. Here at Kaneland, there are dress codes that I believe are not needed. For one, the girl’s shoulders are not supposed to be shown, but why is there such a huge deal about them? Is there something about shoulders that makes them so bad that you can’t show them? In the hallways of Kaneland High School there are girls who are wearing an item of clothing that goes against the code and told to change.
These school dress code policies control or restrict clothing items mostly worn by girls. According to Cole Claybourn’s article, “The report also found that dress codes ‘more frequently restrict items typically worn by girls” (Claybourn) Helping to explain how these policies target items girls wear rather than items typically worn by boys. Many believe this policy to be extremely sexist and believe that it blames girls by body shaming them. According to Li Zhou’s article, “Many of these protests have criticized the dress codes as sexist in that they unfairly target girls by body-shaming and blaming them for promoting sexual harassment.” (Zhou)
Without logical reasoning behind rejecting school regulations, the boundary of error to objecting ideas is greater than the potential change in outcome. Students are required to follow a set of constructed rules, similarly to how administration must follow a hierarchical system of guidelines on campus. Implemented based on moral and ethical code, that system sets the basic outline of behavior, values and expectations the school fosters, including dress code. A dress code provides guidelines of what students should be wearing while at school. The first dress code law was established by the Supreme court following the case of Tinker vs. Des Moines Independent School District (Haynes). Not long after, the first public school district to “require uniforms was in Long Beach, California, in 1994.” (“School”). A large amount of public schools have started requiring students to follow a dress code.
Dress Code When it comes to the topic of dress code there are many controversial factors that come to mind such as While some argue that dress code is necessary in order to properly teach students to dress appropriately, others contend that dress code infringes on students individuality and creativity. This is not to say that there are some people whose feelings land in the gray area in between. In recent discussion of dress code, a common question has been whether dress code is fair or not fair among all students. On the one hand we have parents, young women, and other members of society who argue that some schools take dress code too far.
First, there are many dress code rules in schools. A handful of these rules include, no hats, no illegal substances can be advertised on garments, no sunglasses, and jackets must be worn with good taste (“Student”). Rules directed at a specific gender includes, “Female student can wear unsleeved garments that adequately cover their undergarments” (“Student”), and, ”Male students have to wear sleeved garments” (“Student”). With rules comes opinions, and with opinions comes arguments. Second, Because of these rules there are many people with opinions againsts the dress code policy.
Teachers may send you to the office and this could interrupt your own education. This causes you not to learn cause teachers think what you were wearing was not in dress code. Other things about the dress code are how strict it is and students will not have varieties of
Dress codes lock schools up like jail, and they don’t give students any freedom. Because of school dress codes, kids are revolting at this decision. People enforced dress codes so students couldn’t distract one another, as a result dress codes have impeded learning in many schools. Many people favor dress codes, yet they cost extra money, limit the student’s freedom, and they can be uncomfortable, which is why dress codes are unnecessary.
Dress code, almost all schools have one and this particular subject causes a lot of drama around the globe. The dress code is designed to set us up for how we should appropriately dress in a work environment, but it is also treated differently between the sexes (School Dress Code Sexist?). For females, in certain schools it is a violation of the dress code to wear anything shorter than three inches above the knee, yet if a male were too wear shorts that were shorter than three inches above the knee it is not against dress code. The same can be said for tank tops, if a young lady was walking down the hallway in a tank top that was completely covering up her cleavage she would be sent to the office, and she would be told that she is distracting the male students and that she needs to either change shirts or put on a jacket. One poll that was conducted at Lamar High School showed that if two students, one from each gender, wore the same length of shorts and a tank top, the girl was stopped by a teacher and was dress coded, the boy was left alone all day (LHS).
Dress codes are a necessary aspect of school, and they help teenagers to focus more in school. Rules for how to dress prevent boys and girls from being distracted by fancy clothing. Often times, girls tend to focus on what other girls are wearing and how other girls may look super attractive or trashy. In addition, boys look at girls who are dressed in very releasing clothing. Whether the person is a boy or girl, both become distracted by revealing or poor clothing.

Over the last 20 years, many schools have shifted away from fairly unregulated student dress codes to more stringent dress codes, with some schools implementing voluntary or mandatory school uniforms. There are several positions on the dress code issue, each of which have their own persuasive arguments to support them, which can be evaluated to examine their validity. One position in favor of implementing dress codes is that these standards can improve student safety and perhaps even student performance at school. There are variations on this position that favor strict standards on what students can wear, while others want to implement school uniforms in public schools. The opposing view is that students should not be subject to any dress codes on the grounds that they restrict students' freedom of expression, and that they may place unfair cost burdens on poor families.
Students can express their style and identity through their clothes. Students would like the freedom to keep up with latest styles and fashion and having dress codes takes that away. Many high schools have implemented dress codes that set rules for what students can and cannot wear while on school premises, and yet many people disagree with these policies. Though arguments can be made for either side, a dress code can have a very positive outcome for all parties involved. A fixed dress code promotes professionalism in a learning environment, and contrary to popular belief, it does not limit a student’s freedom of expression. Last but not least it encourages equality and acceptance among their peers. A dress code can be reasonable if used in proper situations that require certain attires.
