Art Censorship of The Statue of David Many people consider censorship a positive act to help ban and blur out slurs that may offend specific individuals. Once the idea is applied to art, however, there are a ton of obstacles that the artist must go through. Many famous art pieces have fallen victim to censorship by exposing large parts of nudity or referencing past, tragic events. A great example is the Statue of David made by Michelangelo Buonarroti in 1501 to 1504; his piece represents a manly figure posing upright while its entire body is exposed from head to toe (Michelangelo.org). Because of these reasons, nudity is out of the question when it is asked about its community. Numerous amounts of people have interpreted the term nudity as a negative act, and have compared it to the adjective ‘naked,’ but according to Dictionary.com, both nudity and naked do have similar meanings, but they are completely different. Nudity represents the positivity and beauty among art, whereas naked is a term used to describe someone or something with the lack of clothing or has a large exposure of something (Dictionary.com). Whether if it contains profanity, nudity, or racism, people will undergo censorship to ban titles for its community. With Michelangelo’s Statue of David, there was lots of conspiracy on whether his artwork falls within the charts of censorship. Many have outright banned his work due the large amounts of nudity that the statue portrays, but some have even considered its censorship as an educational way of how nudity inspired and changed art forever.
