Previous chapters in the book The Art of the Con have told its readers to never trust an inmate and to always assume that the inmate is lying. This truth plays a major role in Chapter 4 of the book. This chapter is titled “The art on manipulation”. It goes into much detail about manipulation. Specifically, it mentions what to expect from inmates and how to deal with their deception. Also, the chapter describes how inmates set up staff to be manipulated. This set up is seen with the games that the inmates try to play on the staff members in the correctional facility. For the most part, these lies are easy to identify because they are not the most sophisticated of lies. In order to identify this deception, it is important to ask many questions about the certain requests or information that has been given to them by the inmates. Officers must stay persistent with their questions and make educated decisions in order to determine whether or not an inmate is being truthful. The inmates can do this by giving compliments to the officer, this will give the employee confidence and make them think the inmates aren’t all that bad. Also the inmates can form a relationship by getting sympathy from the employee. The inmates want the employee to think that they need to help them because the system is unfair. This forming of a strong relationship can also be done with offers of protection, sexual allusions, and pleas for help. With this strong relationship, inmates are turning the employee against their employer. The inmates want the employee to identify themselves more with the inmates than with their fellow employees. This is when the inmates use the person to their advantage. They confront them with their demands and threaten them. They use the illegal acts that they performed for them as blackmail.
