The Aspect of Religion in Supernatural Imagine a world with demons, angels, ghouls, jinns, werewolves, and more roaming the earth. In the television show Supernatural, viewers follow two brothers Sam and Dean Winchester across America as they hunt the supernatural and attempt to find the demon that killed their mother. Supernatural is filled with a huge range of religious representations that serve to instigate the storyline. The religion in the show is absorbed in media logic and thus many religious representations are transformed due to the process of media shaping. This is also known as the process of “mediatization,” which implies that media plays a role in cultural and social change in the long-term. Although Supernatural has many Christian aspects, they are by no means selling Christianity. For example, in season four, an angel of the Lord named Castiel is introduced to the show and immediately has viewers questioning if angels are good or evil. Castiel is first introduced when on God’s orders, he pulls Dean out of hell. Angels are perhaps one of the most familiar religious concepts to people in the West, if not the world. Viewers have their own interpretation of how angels look like; they have white wings, a halo, are inherently good, and are surrounded by light. But in Supernatural, angels have black wings, and their behavior is stuck-up and selfish. Throughout the show, the angels’ true motives and God’s nature are questioned. Basic dichotomies are destroyed and the good does not exclude the bad (Hjarvard).
