In “The Assault”, Harry Mulisch uses the protagonist Anton to change Anton’s mood in different settings, that eventually leads him to find closure. He experiences unhealthy tension that gradually fades into a release which describes his healing process. Throughout the novel, the ugly truth is revealed to him. From stories of the past, Anton gets caught up in mixed emotions from variety of characters in the novel. Each character reveals the truth of the night he lost his family to Anton. As he takes in each situation, the ugly truth helps Anton find personal closure throughout his journey of discovering veracity. From understanding the difference of light versus dark, the symbolism of the howl, and similarities shared in two parts of the novel, the reader and the viewer can clarify how Anton’s heaps of problems helps him discover self-satisfaction. Anton is generated to focus on the tension and release aftermath of the journey of finding individual healing.

During the war he hides from the soldiers while his family and him became separated. As Anton tried to keep his parents in sight, only shadows of people appear, unfortunately none of them seemed to be his parents. From Truus’s exposition of dark, Anton feels frightened from the German Soldiers and losing his family.
