In the movie, The Aviator, Howard Hughes strives to be the best in the airplane and movie industry. He spends large amounts of money on making a movie and airplanes that meet these high standards that include making the airplane so light to the point that it may have trouble functioning. Making a successful movie called Hell’s Angels, Howard still thinks that it can be improved, spending millions of dollars on remaking it. He then meets this burnt out actress, Kate Hepburn, who helps him cope with his symptoms of OCD. When she leaves him for another man, Howard becomes distraught and his disorder starts getting worse. He spells out quarantine, that seeming to sooth him when he goes through these bad patches where his state of mind is disorganized. It may also be due to social-cultural factors since he is high class, having connections in Hollywood and being well known. He seems to be uncomfortable in front of the large crowds of cameras, not paying attention to what is happening. He cannot hear well but that may be due to the fact that he cannot concentrate on what is happening, instead focusing on the bright flashes of the cameras. There is not much privacy when the world knows who you are. When Kate leaves and the FBI come to investigate Howard’s home, it contributes to how bad it get’s. All of his personal belongings are being handled without his permission. He loses control of the situation and becomes so distraught to the point where he locks himself in the movie room.
