In both stories, namely “The Awakening of Katie Fortuin” and “The Hajji, the readers can identify various encounters, these encounters range from being comical to being agonising in nature. In “The Awakening of Katie Fortuin” some encounters can be seen as being comical. The forms throughout the encounters of comical are shown in the way Katie interacts with various people and the way she reacts to different scenarios presented to her after 25 years of being asleep. One such comical encounter is the encounter between Katie and the world after she has woken up. Her reactions to the new environment are ones that we would expect from a Coloured person falling asleep during apartheid and waking up after the reign is over. An example of this is when Katie says to Professor Powell “…They think I’m their relative. They believe apartheid is no more.” This clearly portrays her shock at the current situation; make the situation in the book amusing and comical to the readers. Another encounter that can also be viewed as amusing to the readers is the encounter/s between Katie and her sister.
