When the character of Daphne, in the “Baglady”, is revealed, the temperament of a typical rich English lady is fragmented. Having formed Daphne to undergo many changes to try and represent the struggling women in the late 1990s, A.S. Byatt proclaims her to be a frumpy, self-deprecating female that likes to live in solitary.
