Banned Book Research Paper Fallen Angels, written by Walter Dean Myers was first published in 1988. There have been many conflicts in whether or not the book should be banned. Though in 1999 the book Fallen Angels was removed from Laton, CA school district for its violence and profanity. And this book should be banned for elementary students most definitely, but for middle school students it should be optional to them or their parents, and for high school students there should be no restrictions because for any male or female looking to join the military force, they should know the concepts of war. Peewee was very scared of war and combat and had to be strong throughout the whole process of training and combat and for being as scared as Peewee was he only let it show a couple times. Being in The Vietnam War causes you to become close to people you didn’t even know, everyone thinking it wouldn’t be super hard, so they go through basic training. All these boys don’t even know each other and everyone has the same thought…this is harder than I thought. But it gets harder, they travel to Vietnam and finally see the real picture. Death is right in front of their eyes, so close they could touch it, one wrong move or choice and that’s the end. The novel had soldiers often calling “black” men the “N word” (Book). There are also vast descriptions of shootings and explosions (Stephanie Zvirin). ”Fallen Angels is not a romantized depiction of war, instead it into a position where they must kill or be killed” (Tony Wright). The Novel doesn’t lie about how hard combat is, it is an intense story that pulls readers in, and is one of the best anti-war novels ever written. The novel should be restricted for the fact that parents are concerned about the sexual content and racism. In one segment of the book Richie and Lobel both fantasize about sexual experiences. Though early exposure to this book would be amazing for and male or female looking into joining the military. It is also a book that will leave you thinking and isn’t for everybody. The parents do know the children better and if they don’t want their child to be reading this book then that’s their choice but again, if their child is looking into joining the military this book is a must
