Above the quote communicates the idea that knowledge and information a person may receive is all because of books. Even those books that have been banned because of their content. For example, The Watsons Go To Birmingham 1963 for the most part takes place in the south; in Alabama. In fact, segregation has always been stronger there, making it a place most likely for death, violence, and hate toward African Americans. This book does talk about some events such as these, since the Watson family is African American. Yet it withholds a valuable amount of teaching. For example, Kenny the second youngest and his family visit Grandma Sands in Alabama. Subsequently, they experience a bombing at the church, Joey, his sister,was currently in. For which Kenny commented, “...I walked past where that guy had set the little girl in blue, right next to where someone else had set a little girl in red” (Curtis 186). Before the time of the bombing, Joey had followed a boy who looked like Kenny away from the church. As a result, she was not found until later; but she was still alive. This quote illustrates that the casualties included a great number of children. Possibly, those parents in grief were also carrying their child's body's out. Lying and screaming on the ground because of the devastation that has just struck them. Consequently, having their family broken apart and losing the ability of ever making long lasting memories with daughters or sons would make them think of how they spent their time with their children. For example, after seeing the complete destruction and death from the church mentioned before; kenny was traumatized. Then asking his brother while he is crying from fear and sadness in the bathroom together “ ‘Why would they do that Byron?’ ‘I don’t know Kenny. Momma and Dad say they can’t help themselves, they did it because they’re sick, but I don’t know. I ain’t never heard of no sickness that makes you kill little girls just because you don’t want them in your school. I don’t think they’re sick at all, I think they just let hate eat them up and turn them into monsters. But it’s O.K. now, they can’t hurt you here. It’s all right’ ” (Curtis 199 and 120). The quote defines the true meaning of brotherhood. How family will always be there for young adults through hard changing times. Such as death of a loved one because of age or sickness. Or even for people who have family overseas serving for their country and need comfort while they are gone. While reading, teens will be able to comprehend the comfort and availability of very close relationships, such as Byron was for Kenny, or even close friends.
