The Bass, the River and Sheila Mant In the beginning of the story the narrator falls in love with Sheila Mant. As the story develops he learns that she thinks fishing is dumb, since he loves fishing he is dumbfounded. As to not offput her cuts a bass off his line. That choice goes wrong as she leaves him for someone else.
In the story “The Bass, the River, and Sheila Mant” a boy takes a girl named Sheila Mant on a date and has to make a difficult decision. That difficult decision is his dream girl or a huge fish that he might never get the chance to catch again. This is a hard choice to make because he loves fishing, but Sheila on the other hand does not. He could pick Sheila because he loves her very much. For the past couple of summers he has been admiring and watching her.
In the story, When a Southern Town Broke a Heart, Jacqueline Woodson uses a variety of symbolism and metaphor to show that when you get wiser, your perception of things change. One example of Woodson conveying this theme is when she writes, “When the deep green beauty revealed my place and time in history and laid claim to that moment all children know, when the tendrils of adulthood move toward us, showing themselves long before we are ready to see.” This quote describes when she realized the nostalgia of her home was masking the bitter and unfortunate side that “adulthood” is showing her. The narrator has a major crush on a women- seventeen year old, Sheila Mant. The narrator finally, and I say finally, asks Sheila on a date via the narrator’s boat.

In Judith Ortiz Cofer’s “The Changeling”, the hardships of gender stereotypes are exposed. The contrast between a young girl’s imagination and the reality of her gender role is clear by her attempt to appease her parents. She is neither manly enough to gain the attention of her father nor womanly enough to attain the respect of her mother. Her dilemma of not being able to fit in is emphasized by Cofer’s use of imagery and repetition.
