In the lyrical poem, “The Bean Eaters,” written by Gwendolyn Brooks, the speaker illustrates a day in the life of an elderly couple through anaphora and alliteration. Although this elderly couple lives a simple life, they continue to carry on and enjoy their lives.
Anaphora is a common occurrence in this poem; it is used in all three stanzas. The first example of this is in the first stanza, while the speaker is describing a routine of eating beans on, “plain chipware on a plain and creaking wood” (Brooks 1). Anaphora was used to emphasize the simplicity of their lives, keeping the audience more captivated, and making it flow onto their next stanza where it is used again. While
