The beast was introduced into the novel when the boy with the mulberry birthmark claimed he saw a snakelike thing. The young boys were afraid of the beast and Jack reassured them by saying that he would hunt the beast. The older boys questioned whether or not there actually was a beast. Percival thought that the beast came out of the ocean and there were suggestions that the beast was a ghost. Samneric thought that they saw the beast at the top of the mountain but it was really just a dead parachuter. When the Lord of the Flies talked to Simon, Simon realized that there was no actual beast and that it was inside of them, "'You knew, didn't you? I'm part of you? Close, close, close! I'm the reason why it's no go? Why things are what they are'"
