The Beaver Board's Mystical Quotes In Franny and Zooey by J.D Salinger, Franny goes through a religious breakdown and is guided back to her “sanity” through her older brother Zooey. Zooey and Franny’s religious belief was greatly influenced through Buddy and Seymour. Buddy and Seymour taught themselves through quotes in various reading material. They wrote these quotes on a beaverboard placed on the back of their door, as if they were their spirit guides always needing to be seen.
One quote deserves particular attention that is shown , when zooey entered Buddy and Seymour’s childhood room like it was a shrine, which was Epictetus’s quote “Concerning the Gods, there are those who deny the very existence of the Godhead; others say that it exists, but neither bestirs nor concerns itself not has forethought far anything. This party symbolizes Buddy’s appearances and tribute to the story. He is acknowledged as one of the “bastards” (Zooey. 54), according to zooey, responsible for Franny and Zooey’s religious childhood education. He also admits to narration during an intro of zooey’s first part, “I say that my current offering isn't a mystical story, or a religiously mystifying story, at all. I say it's a compound, or multiple, love story, pure and complicated." (Zooey.1.2). This proves of his thought and care to both heavenly and earthly matters. What is unique to Buddy, is even with his attitude to both matters, we only see advice and guidance through a three year old letter and dialogue between Franny and Zooey.
