In the story, “The Bell,” by David Somerset, he uses different literary devices to help the theme of revenge stand out to the readers.

Summarize the plot of the story in about 1-2

In “The Bell,” Rattigan has cheated many people in the casino on an island, which used to be a prison for the worst criminals. When a character named Antonov gets cheated by Rattigan, he wants revenge and he ends up killing Rattigan.

In the short story it said, “‘Hey! I’m lost!’ Antonov called to the fellow below. ‘Can you help me out here? I can’t find my way out!’” (The Bell, page 45.) In the story Antonov was crying for help since he was lost in the prison, this is ironic because he didn’t want help. Since he wanted to get revenge on Rattigan by ringing the bell to attract the sharks. Antonov was acting like he needed help, which would act as a cover up so he could later get revenge on Rattigan.

Also in the short story, after Antonov rings the bell to get the attention of the old man, he offers him money to lead him out of the prison. It stated that the old man considered his bribe to lead him out to safety. This is ironic because he didn’t consider Antonov’s bribe since all he wanted was for Antonov to ring the bell and kill Rattigan. This shows how the old man also wanted revenge on Rattigan, making the theme revenge.
