Billions of them, with a never seen level of intelligence. Daphne du Maurier’s story The Birds shows us what that revolution would look like. The twisted tale inspired Alfred Hitchcock’s film The Birds, but Alfred Hitchcock decided to only keep the idea of birds attacking. He changed the setting, characters, and plotline. Nat’s wife is not given a name. The first attack is at the window of Nat’s bedroom, a few birds were trying to get in, and one went for his eyes when he tried to send them away. Not long after, they hear a cry from the children’s room. Nearly 50 birds of different small species had flown in and attacked. People don’t believe Nat’s story, Mrs.Trigg even asks if he was drunk. On the wireless/radio Nat and his wife learn that bird attacks are happening all over the country, and they are advised to board up windows and doors. Nat’s wife thinks that the army should be sent in to shoot the birds, but Nat argues that it wouldn’t be possible. Nat decides to go to the bus stop to pick up Jill and tells his wife not to leave the house and to make sure Johnny stays inside. There are two main protagonists, Mitch and Melanie. Mitch is an unmarried lawyer, who goes to Bodega bay every weekend to help his Mother with the farm. He has no children, but he has a little sister named Cathy. The first attack that we see is a gull diving at Melanie when she is in a boat. In the film, the attacks are isolated to Bodega bay, other than a few attacks on neighboring cities. The second attack is at Annie Hayworth's house, when a bird flies into the door. The next day a group of birds attacks Cathy’s birthday party, not long after a bunch of small birds fly down the Chimney. Mitch’s mother, Lydia, goes to talk to the other farmer who is having problems with Chickens not eating and finds him dead with his eyes pecked out. Lydia fears for Cathy’s safety after seeing this, because the school has big windows, Melenie offers to pick Cathy up and notices a large number of crows gathering on the playground. She brings the birds to Annie's attention and they safely get the kids home, or to the hotel if home is too far away. Melanie goes to the dinner to call her father and a big argument starts. An older woman whose a bird expert says that the birds are not planning attacks because they aren't intelligent enough. A drunk argues that it's the end of the world and quotes the bible.
