In Peter Macinnis’s book, Bittersweet: The Story of Sugar, he documents the history of sugar throughout world history. By exploring the book further, we can arrive at the idea that the history of sugar is “bittersweet” because of how it impacts social, economic, and political change over the course of history. To better understand the impact sugar made throughout history, we must address the summary points of Macinnis’s book. Macinnis starts by talking about how the earliest records of sugar cane can be traced back to Buddha in India (around 550 B.C.), a Persian military expedition (510 B.C.), passing through India, and the army of Alexander the Great in India (around 325 B.C.) (Macinnis 2).
More cheaper and “efficient” products mean more money coming their way. Monea’ Holmes Freshman English 2 Professor Williams Food Deserts Food deserts are spaces that are at least a mile or more over from any super markets and/or shopping centers. They are usually located in places where most of the people who live there do not have reliable transportation. Most businesses in food deserts have corner stores and fast food restaurants, but there usually are not any healthy food places or choices in the area. Supermarkets have been harshly judged for leaving out a large population of the Black and Latino population in cities such as Memphis, Los Angeles and Detroit. These cities are desperate for more healthy food besides the many fast food places they have to offer.
When it comes to nutrition labels on food packaging, it only shows the amount of sugar in grams, never in percent. This gimmicks people into thinking that its not much sugar in the product they’re eating, because while the grams seem small, people are unaware of the actual amount of sugar placed into the product. Moving on, since the 1900s, obese rates in America have drastically increased in the 2000s. This meaning that people are starting to eat more food, with sugar they did not even know was in there. This is unfair to the people who develop diseases and illnesses, like getting obese, diabetes or cancer, because of the unknown amount of sugar placed into the food.
Sugar, which is in almost everything, is one of the biggest problems. As noted on, “Is Sugar Toxic”, Dr. Robert Lustig, the lead researcher says sugar links to a number of diseases from obesity to heart disease. He also states that 75% of these are preventable. Studies have shown that when we consume sugar, it’s equivalent to when someone does cocaine. Another study by Dr. Cantley has shown that sugar can help cancerous cells grow and multiply.
Hi Deonna, Great information on how unnoticed factors can affect one’s overall nutrition status. While we are all familiar with the poor choices and unhealthy habits and lifestyle, I agree that our exposures to drugs, chemical exposures that alter our gut functioning, and junk food marketing are influential enough to follow the current unhealthy trends of eating. It is true that public education is necessary, but I also think the attitude of individuals has to be addressed as well.
