Sally Wang Professor Nash History 1301 13 October 2014 Concept of War Michael Shaara’s The Killer Angels recounts the Battle of Gettysburg through the eyes of key leaders from both the north and the south. Shaara provides insight into the thoughts and decisions that were made that would inevitably determine the outcome of the bloodiest battle of the Civil War. The northern concept of war that they were fighting for the sake of freedom and to restore the union by taking in prisoners and preserving he high grounds at Gettysburg helped them force the Confederates to retreat.
The book first copyrighted in 1974 by Michael Shaara is “The Killer Angels”. This book is a historical fiction book and takes place in Gettysburg in 1863. The story starts on June 29, 1863, the four main characters that we see the most are General Robert E. Lee, Lieutenant General James Longstreet, Colonel Joshua Chamberlain, and Major General John Buford. The book changes it’s point of views between these four men to get different perspectives of what is going on from June 29th to July 3rd of 1863. It all starts with a spy showing up and informing Longstreet that he saw the Union army moving nearby, this information shocked him because General Stuart was supposed to be on the lookout for the Union.
The Killer Angels follows the three day long, decisive battle of Gettysburg during the United States Civil War. The book’s storytelling is purely chronological, as the story progresses our perspective is flip flopped between the Union and Confederate sides of the battle, however the story is consistently told in the 3rd person. Michael Shaara uses immense details when describing this battle and does an incredible job of describing every character and scene, making everything easy to visualize and allowing you to put yourself in the story. The story reveals to us the thought process of all the seemingly fearless military leaders, as they discuss battle strategies and how to outsmart their opponent. In Surviving the Angel Of Death: The True Story of a Mengele Twin in Auschwitz written by Eva Mozes Kor and Lisa Rojany Buccieri tells the story of Eva and Miriam Kor’s time in the Nazi death camp Auschwitz. The day of their arrival to Auschwitz they were seperated from their family for being identical twins. The dawning horror that the events occurring to Eva and Miriam are not some horrific nightmare but their actual reality. From shaving their heads to painting large red x’s over the back of their clothing the SS officers were making sure that they were not going to escape. Change is essential to life. One cannot survive without changing. As Harold Wilson said, “He who rejects change is the architect of decay. The only human institute which rejects change is the cemetery.” Therefore, Lee should have listened to Longstreet about changing from offensive to defensive warfare.
Sinner’s in the eyes of One “The Minister’s Black Veil,” by Nathaniel Hawthorne uses a black veil to symbolize the sins that the human may carry throughout their entire life. “ At the end of the story, as he lies dying, the Reverend Mr. Hooper says that he sees a veil on all the faces of those who are attending his deathbed. In this way, the major theme of the story is developed; that is, it is suggested that everyone wears a black veil, that everyone has a secret sin or sorrow that is hidden from all others. Everyone could, like the Reverend Mr. Hooper, cover his face with a black veil.” ( Reed 3 ).
I chose the book Black Hearts by Jim Frederick because it was recommended to me by First Lieutenant Smaldone. He had to read it as course material during his training at TBS (The Basic School). Officers go to TBS following Officer Candidate School where newly commissioned officers learn to lead and inspire fellow Marines. Black Hearts is a non-fiction story about the 502nd Infantry Regiment’s deployment to a region south of Baghdad, Iraq and it’s breakdown of leadership, morale, and discipline. The Unit was known as “The Black Heart Brigade.”
Banned Book Research Paper Fallen Angels, written by Walter Dean Myers was first published in 1988. There have been many conflicts in whether or not the book should be banned. Though in 1999 the book Fallen Angels was removed from Laton, CA school district for its violence and profanity. And this book should be banned for elementary students most definitely, but for middle school students it should be optional to them or their parents, and for high school students there should be no restrictions because for any male or female looking to join the military force, they should know the concepts of war. The sequences of war are substantially portrayed by David Malouf within his novel Fly Away Peter. Through the use of various literary techniques and conventions, Malouf explores and incorporates the idea of peace before war, obligations and events at war, death, and the aftermath of war. The text is written in 1914, a timeless era on the Queensland coast. This was at the time of the first outbreak of World War 1, when most young men felt obligations to defend their nation in a foreign country. In the case of the protagonist, Jim Saddler, the trenches of the Armentières is where he fought for his nation in this tale of companionship and continuity.

A quote by Curt Armstrong, “Our human family is completed when everyone is included.” Elissa Down produced the film, The Black Balloon, in 2008 to depict the struggles that not only the parents of a disabled child face but the struggles the siblings face as well. The Black Balloon is a coming-of-age film based on a familiar Australian family in the 1990s including a disabled elder son and a young teenager. The text explores the journey of Thomas, a neglected teenager, finding acceptance and maturity towards his disabled older brother through the help of Maggie, Simon, Charlie and Jackie. The Black Balloon uses film techniques such as music, colour, juxtaposition, dialogue and camera shots to evoke humour and compassion in the audience.

Edgar Allan Poe addresses the dark and gruesome side of human nature in his writing “The Black Cat”, which during that time and even now are perceived as radical ideas. This dark human nature is displayed in Poe’s writing as the narrator recalls the happenings of a most erratic event.
