Glory 's portrayal of African Americans fighting in the Civil War for the extinction of slavery and equality of individuals is a heart warming story. However, although the Union won, and slavery was abolished, certain events occurring today question the equal treatment of all races in this country. In fact, in 2015 police have killed more than 100 unarmed black people, this is five times the rate of unarmed whites in 2015. Some of these tragic moments include the death of 18 year old Michael Brown, shot by an officer in Ferguson, Missouri, 43 year old Eric Garner, who was choked to death after he screamed"I can 't breathe," even a 12 year old Tamir Rice was shot and killed after officers mistook his toy gun for a real weapon.
Throughout American history, it has been the common citizens who have changed the course of history. A voice speaks out, and its fellows listen, and when they add their own voices, they become a shout impossible to ignore. When good citizens come together for a common cause they become a powerful force that is impossible to ignore as well as an unstoppable force for change. America itself is an example of this trend. America, before it was the free and independent nation that it is today, was a British colony, subject to the laws and levies that King George passed.
There have been many movements in the United States in which African Americans have been the focal point for example the Selma March, the March on Washington, the civil rights movement, and even today the Black Lives Matter movement. Those movements have had a significant impact on the United States and still play a part in today’s society. Those movements still play a part in today’s society because without those movements there wouldn’t be a Black Lives Matter because African Americans wouldn’t have the courage to stand up a fight for their rights if it wasn’t for Martin Luther King Jr., Malcolm X, Rosa Parks, or the many other activists that stood up for African-American rights. Selma and the March on Washington share a big relationship to the Black Lives Matter and they are just as important to the civil rights movement.
Black lives matter is a national organization working towards bettering the lives of African Americans. It works toward rebuilding the black liberation movement. Black lives matter movement does not mean any other life is not as important. It's simply justifying that right now in the moment, the lives at stake are black lives.
I think If Martin Luther King Jr. were to reappear today he would definitely note that in the almost 50 years since his death, there has been progress with race relations in America, but we still have a long way to go. According to “The Washington Post”, Last year 963 African Americans were shot and killed by police. Ever since the 1960s Africans has been fighting for equality; in the Eric Garner case and Michael Brown, it demonstrated how White police officers abuse and misuse their power towards African Americans. Since the increase of police brutality communities has had marches, rallies, and even the Black Lives Matters movements as a response to show that Polices’ abuse of power is unacceptable. A total 385 white people have been killed by police this year, and 66 of them were unarmed at the time of their death. But, just 25 police officers have died from firearms-related violence in the same period. Now there is a small controversy conflict in the media because of the #BlackLivesMatter movement, which I think is just certain people dry hating. Although many people may argue that the Black Lives Matter Movement is exclusionary, regressive, or divisive, upon further research on the topic I would argue that it’s important not only to understand the message behind the movement but to take action towards making a change even if you are not a part of the black community. We have seen this being evident even during the civil rights era, with white students joining the Freedom Rides and standing alongside black students to produce change. If it was clear to those back then that striving for change should include people from all walks of life then maybe we should acknowledge that this could be the way in which we work to produce a safe space for people of all color. In order to create change, it is crucial for people of every community to acknowledge the problems that black people still face to this day in America and speak out against any injustice.

It gave me the reassurance that I 'm not the only one see the there 's a big crack on the wall. The word black has a lot of negative connotation that baffles me. Being in a predominantly white institution like SUNY Fredonia, the word black still brings the chills. To me, this means that until the Americans open their eyes and realize that there 's systemic and economic racism in their own country towards people of color, then the discussion of everyone 's life matter.
