Maharg's third connection with major league baseball came in 1919 as he conspired to fix the 1919 World Series—the infamous Black Sox Scandal. Several White Sox players, including Eddie Cicotte, Chick Gandil, and Swede Risberg, conspired with Sleepy Bill Burns, a former big-league pitcher, to throw the World Series in exchange for $100,000. Billy Maharg worked with Burns to find financing. Maharg and Burns approached New York gambler Arnold Rothstein to raise the money for the players. After the 1919 Black Sox scandal, where eight young men threw off the 1919 World Series in exchange for money from gamblers, MLB officials adopted rule 21 in 1927 (Macramalla 1). The MLB rule 21 is as follows: “Any player, umpire, or club or league official or employee, who shall bet any sum whatsoever upon any baseball game in connection with which the bettor has a duty to perform shall be declared permanently ineligible.” This rule appears everywhere. It is impossible for anyone dealing with baseball to not have read the rule. Rose is now on the ineligible list due to deliberately disobeying the regulations.
What Is it Jim Devlin the ace pitcher for the Louisville Grays was involved and implicated in the gambling scandal that shook the baseball world in 1877. The year is 1919. The White Sox are playing against the Cincinnati Reds in the world series. The Cincinnati Reds beat the White Sox, however, eight of the White Sox players were accused of throwing the game, which is just intentionally losing the game. There are many reasons why their team could have done this, but it was obviously because of money. There are also many problems with what they did and why they would decide to do it.
Even the owner of the Black Sox, Charles Comiskey was so worried about the influence gambling might have on game results that he posted sign in his stadium reading “No Betting Allowed In This Park” (Pellowski 34). “After opening-day loss in the 1919 World Series, Chicago manager Kid Gleason, as well as catcher Ray Schalk knew something was up” (Pellowski 55). As the incidents before stopped the fix. After they abandoned the deal they won two games and being back in the race (Andrews). “Rumors went around that the Reds had beat the best team in the league” (u-s-history.com).
“These White Sox boys were an especially volatile, spirited bunch, a club loaded with bitterness and tension.” (Asinof 6) I wonder if this played a part in the scandal. If people knew that they were a rowdy group that, could have been easily mistaken for a bunch of guys just playing ball so they could party and make money. The bitterness in the club was because of the low pay they were all receiving.
Eight baseball players made a decision that ruined their lives. Eddie Cicotte, Claude Williams, Arnold Gandil, Charles Risberg, George Weaver, Joe Jackson, Oscar Felsch, and Fred McMullin called home after an evening of confessing. Did confessing lead to more years of imprisonment and fines or did it bring nothing to their plate to overcome. Black Sox baseball scandal is a malicious disaster for the teammates involved because of all the cheating during the game, how the gambling went down, and all the investigating. To Chicago fans the World Series was a given win, but to the players they would have to play below the sub par and manage to gamble so they could lose the whole series.

The Black Sox scandal was soon laid aside as the expansion of the social world of baseball continued to expand. Major League Baseball created a farm system allowing owners to hire players, at a lesser salary, to be groomed in the minor leagues. The farm system gave more young men exposure and allowed the team owners to groom undeveloped players into major league players. Players in the farm system had each other for support; only they understood the burning desire to break into the major leagues. Many of today’s elite payers got their start in the farm system playing in the minors before moving up to the major leagues.
