In the film ‘The Blind Side’ (2009) by John Lee Hancock, the scene where Mike is asked if he wants to be part of the family is used to further the movie's theme of family and football. To do this Hancock uses four techniques to do this, medium close-up (camera shot), insert shot (shot framing), long shot (camera size), and non-diegetic music (sound effect)
The top half of Mike’s chest, to the top of Mike’s hair, was captured in a medium close-up. The background was blurred out so the focus was on Mike and he was slightly to one side so his shoulders didn’t take up the whole of the bottom of the frame. A medium close-up was used to focus on Mike’s facial expressions. When Mike was asked “if you want to be part of this family” Mike had an expression

I believe this because of how mikes background is often shown in flashbacks or him going back in the time of the movie, but just as mikes grades improved, he moved on from his beginnings and made something of himself with the help of his family. Throughout the film, people never gave up on Mike, in academics, football, or because of racism and bias surrounding mikes birth town. Despite mikes horrible grades and the teachers not knowing how to teach him in the begging, causing his grades to remain at rock bottom and made the school rethink his place at their school. When one teacher found a how Mike learns verbally, all the teachers started to teach Mike that way, causing his grades to improve to the point where he could start playing football for the school. When Mike started to play football it became apparent that despite his body being ideal for his role, Mike didn’t have the knowledge or mindset to play his position. S,J is shown in many different scenes explaining how to play football to Mike in many different ways, often with a visual representation of what he was explaining so Mike could understand. And despite Mike not playing football as well as he could, S,J wasn’t upset and explained once again. Leanne was vital to Mike becoming great at football, despite Mike not being in the right mindset to bowl people out of the way in football, Leanne …show more content…
This scene develops the idea of family in this film because it shows everyone in the family together and fully accepting of Mike as part of the family (long shot). it shows everyone in the family together and fully accepting of Mike as part of the family (long shot). It also shows that Mike is now comfortable with the Ohers and also sure that he is part of the family (medium close-up + insert shot). It's clear to see that Mike is confident with who he is and his wants. Which is a large improvement from how withdrawn and unconfident he was in the beginning. The beginning of the scene when Mike is asked “if he wants to be part of this family” shows how happy the rest of the family is when Mike says “I thought I already was”. This shows that the whole family loves Mike as part of the family and there are no conflicting feelings. The Ohers did a lot to help Mike, not because of his evident football potential, but because Mike needed help and later became part of their family. They never tolerated racist and biased comments from anyone, not even from their friends, as shown by Leanne telling off her friends and threatening to cut them off if they continued. They openly supported him. When Mike felt betrayed by the Ohers, feeling like they helped him with other intentions, Leanne shows that it’s not the case by saying that Mike could play for whatever university he wanted. Even though it meant that he didn’t go to the uni she
