However, in order to escape slavery, Harriet stays for seven years in a small shed in her grandmother’s home and eventually gains her freedom. The book shows that in a system of slavery, family ties and the idea of motherhood are two things that are almost unachievable due to the uncertainty
In Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl, Harriet Jacobs tells of her experiences as a slave. She had to endure the hardships that came with both being black and a woman in 1861. As a slave she was supposed to serve and obey her master. As a woman she was supposed to be submissive to men. She describes several situations in her memoir that would make me oppose slavery if I were a Northern white woman in 1861.

There are several parallels between the stories of Joseph and Esther. One of the main commonalities was that they had to make tough choices. Joseph’s story begins with him being favoured by his father which lead to his brothers disliking him. Throughout the book of Genesis, there is a history of fathers and mothers favouring some children more than others, so Joseph’s story does not differ from others in that sense. The difference here is that this imbalance of Jacob’s love resulted in Joseph being sold as a slave by his brothers: “When his brother realized that their father loved him more than them, they grew to hate him – they wouldn’t even speak to him” (Genesis 37:4).

The book of Esther appears as a historical book in the Hebrew Bible. Set in the city of Susa, during the Persian empire, the story of Esther portrays the literary convention of a Jew in a foreign court. Esther, the heroine, saves her people from destruction and creates the origin for the holiday, Purim. The lack of divine intervention in this book raises many questions, especially the inclusion of it canonicity. Many aspects of the story, point to the idea that the story of Esther began as a Babylonian narrative that was adopted into the Hebrew Bible.
Some of the stories in the bible are so amazing and so mind blowing that its almost hard to believe, or it may feel like reading a fairytale. It’s amazing to think that God was so powerful he was able to make so many astonishing miracles and lead so many people to such stunning and faithful lives. Esther is one of my favorites among those stories. It really is like reading a fairytale and knowing it actually happened makes it even better. In the Old Testament, Esther is one of the most influential and inspiring characters.
