Making the Big Red Machine is an in-depth dive into the Cincinnati Reds baseball team in the seventy’s and how they dominated. Daryl Smith writes the book, a lifelong Reds fan and director of the Leadership program at the College of Mount St. Joseph. The purpose of Smith writing this book was to give the perspective of the General Manager, Bob Howsam Jr. Smith explains that many books, articles, and media have been made about the players and manager, but not many about the GM who put the team together. A long-undervalued position in Major League Baseball, the GM signs players, makes trades, and has to follow all of the intricate rules that baseball sets in place for a level playing field between teams and its their job to put the best 40-man roster together and then 26 of the best on the active MLB roster. Choosing
A significant argument brought up by Mr. Klein is that although the MLB is incorporated in Dominican baseball, Dominican ball players have surfaced on all kinds of professional stages serving as an indication that maybe it’s the work ethic and character traits of these ball players that has allowed them to reach the success that they have. In doing so, Klein gives a voice to the unheard individuals that have done everything in their power to provide for their families through Dominican-U.S. product chain.
He uncovers the greed that came not from the players, but from their owner, Charles Comiskey. In the 1900’s, there was not much regulation for managing baseball teams. By 1919, the sport had only been played by the National
In the late 1960s At first, I thought Gmelch’s book was going to be another dull and slow-moving memoir that revealed little new insight into the minor leagues. Its slow beginning reinforced this idea. After about fifty pages though I realized I was mistaken. With great humor, personal insight, recollection, and research, Gmelch succeeds in taking his readers back to a time where minor leaguers, void of modern technology, had to lean one another for support and camaraderie. Their salaries were as low as their, which meant sharing a
With baseball beginning to take off after the war, and the many fans out there watching the famous pastime sport, unfortunately there is a bad side to it. What might this bad side be to the best sport to watch? Well, it’s gambling, betting on games was a very fun pastime for gamblers. During the 1919 season many people speculated that gambling was happening during the season, as well as the World Series. While much of the league was concerned about gambling, unfortunately the players weren’t.
It worked so good that when the Cubs’ suddenly plunged to the bottom of the standing in 1948, a near-record 1,237,792 fans still came to the park that season. Philip Wrigley saw the game through an economic lens. What he did not recognize was how one corporate function could subtly foil the goals of

To them baseball fostered masculinity, insistent independence and began to mentally question the business hierarchy. For Mexican American’s, baseball signified more than simple recreational competitions, but a stage where they could dispel the notion of Mexicans being unequal to whites. The games provided a legal platform where they could confront these insulting allegations. From this stepping stone, Mexican Americans politicized and then used baseball for the forms of communal action that the agricultural companies wanted to avoid in the first place. Players purposely learned the leadership and organization tools which transcended baseball and ascended into the realm of the political forum.
In “Athletes and Compensation”, the article argues about the salary of athletes in the United States, and whether or not they are paid a substantial amount. The author discusses the average salary for each professional sport, and also the revenue collected from the athletes as well. The article also informs the reader of the reasons why the author believes the athletes need the salary they receive. Throughout “Athletes and Compensation”, the author utilizes the rhetorical strategies of logical appeal, emotional appeal, and tone to support his argument that athletes are not overpaid whatsoever. To begin, the author uses logical appeal multiple times throughout the article to persuade the reader that athletes should not have their salaries lowered.
In the constitution of one early baseball club, it was stated that it would be the club’s objective to “advance morally, socially, and physically, the interests of its members” (Goldstein, 17). Victorians, however, worried that baseball would take away from work. The baseball fraternity insisted that baseball was compatible with Victorian values, as it encouraged self-control. The best ball clubs were said to be very disciplined and well trained (Goldstein, 22). Baseball required cooperation between teammates and success and depended on familiarity with the playing styles of teammates (Goldstein, 22).
The Most Exciting Time in Baseball Baseball is America’s pastime. The game that once was based on honesty and good character changed to a game of lying and chemistry during the 1990’s. The 1990’s and the early 2000’s was a time in baseball full of monstrous home runs, exhilarating RBI’s, and steroids. During this time, the players loved and idolized the most like Barry Bonds, Mark McGwire, and Sammy Sosa were also the ones destroying the great game of baseball.
“Moneyball” is a movie that was released in 2011 that was based on the rise and fall of the 2002 Oakland Athletics. Manager Billy Beane, played by Brad Pitt, and his assistant Peter Brand, played by Jonah Hill, had to deal with the disadvantage of having one of the lowest payrolls in the MLB. The duo then goes on to make a few low profile signings to replace their three lost stars from the season before. With the combination of Beane’s Motivational tactics and Brand’s use of analytics, after a slow start to their season, the lowly regarded Oakland Athletics go on to win twenty straight games which is the longest win streak in American League history. The win streaks predictably sprung the A’s into the right direction where they go on to win 103 games for the year and
After the Miami Marlins fired Ozzie Guillen, MLB has just four non-white managers in its ranks. While there is a higher percentage of white players in MLB and certainly fewer black players in baseball than the NFL the number of Hispanic and Latino players would lead one to believe that MLB teams would find cultural diversity an asset in a manager. As the game gets more global, that diversity has yet to fully resonate within the managerial ranks. The mission statement on the Minor League “To promote the game of baseball while providing affordable, fun, family-entertainment to all members of the diverse communities we serve. We achieve this by fostering an inclusive environment that provides ownership, investment, management, employment, business-to-business and fan participation opportunities that are enhanced and supported by grass roots initiatives focused on education, citizenship and leadership among our youth”.
Baseball is often considered America’s Pastime; a sport that has its roots in the foundation of the country and has been enjoyed by generation after generation. Heroes of the game have become types of folk heroes within the borders of the United States of America, and citizens from all backgrounds have come to venues from coast to coast in order to enjoy the game. The sports’ professional participants, as expected, have directly reflected racial standards of the country at any given time; the sport was dominated by whites until the color barrier was broken, ushering in new participants of different descents. The involvement of African Americans in Major League Baseball is extremely vital for the sport, and is a topic that has been somewhat addressed by the league’s hierarchy. Despite those efforts to increase African American participation, however, the black people of America have recently seen their representation in
