Friendship is quite a unique form of relationship, as it can be formed from many things; whether it be hardships and trauma or simple relatability; and it can stick through life even without any physical or literal tie between people. An interesting example of this is Max and Liesel’s friendship from The Book Thief by Markus Zusak, as they bond in a unique way that is truly only applicable to friendships. They develop a bond based on their similarities, beliefs, and situation, and it is a unique show of how people can connect. The main thing they share in the beginning is more direct: their nightmares—and through that first connection they become friends. Throughout the rest of the book, their shared traits grow with their friendship, and they find that they both have a shared belief in the power of books and words, and that helps inspire Liesel later in the book—but, more than that, it helps to grow their friendship. They both have a unique view of words and their significance, specifically their power, whether the words are spoken or written, and that view that they share brings them closer throughout the book, as their shared experiences, traumas, and beliefs turn into a friendship. All of this shows how their shared traits are what ultimately create their friendship, and how those commonalities between them help grow trust in a way that isn’t shown through any of Liesel’s other relationships with people throughout the book. They find a lot of things they have in common, and it helps them; it strengthens whatever bond they may have had without those things, and while their friendship may not exactly be conventional or a friendship in the way most people expect, it is most certainly a bond that they share through trust developed through their shared opinions and shared
