In the captivating quote, Anne Frank says, “I don't think of all the misery, but of all the beauty that remains.” this demonstrates the universal idea of dealing with loss. Losing a loved one or a close friend is hard to believe, but dealing with the negative feeling of the lost one is harder. Many people take days, months, or even years to get over the lost one. Dealing with the emotions that loss creates puts many in depression or inactive stages. When one deals with loss, it does not take time but it is what one does within the time affected. Losing one can later bring positive outcomes if one finds an unusual way to deal with it. For example, in The Book Thief by Markus Zusak, he demonstrates that there can be a positive outcome from the loss of one. All of his characters show strong feelings of loss, but all find a special way to deal with the feelings. However, that significant way leads to happiness. Hans deals with the loss of Erik by playing Erik’s accordion because Erik taught Hans how to play and that is Erik’s favorite instrument. Hans is also continuing the legacy of Erik by playing the accordion. Hans was given the accordion after Erik’s death, which leads to Hans finding out about Max. Hans is paying back for Erik saving Hans life. Hans and the family gains a new family member and they care about Max. Max brings the Hubermanns smiles and care. Even though Liesel lost someone who cares for her and deeply wanted to kiss her, Ilsa lost her only son, and Hans lost someone who saved his life, Ilsa, Liesel, and Hans all make up the lost by spending time with the loss one family member or helping them out.
