Death from The Book Thief and the familiar personification of the Grim Reaper have their similarities and differences. Both (of course) share the similarity of death and having a connection to darkness/dark colors. The Grim Reaper is known for such things, but death reveals this in the prologue of the The Book Thief : “Personally, I like a chocolatecolored sky. Dark, dark chocolate. People say it suits me.” (Zusak 4). However, both figures of death share differences. One of the biggest differences is how they are like. Since his parents said no to the Nazis, the world of
Rudy basically fell apart. “If he’d intervened, it might have changed everything. ***Three
Possibilities*** 1. Alex Steiner wouldn’t have suffered the same punishment as Hans
Hubermann. 2. Rudy would have gone away to school. 3. And just maybe, he would have lived.”
(Zusak 411). From that one decision, Rudy’s world fell just like how the simple tipping of a domino can cause an entire line to fall over.

In the closing paragraphs of part nine, Death foreshadows something in the next few months. Whatever these events will be, the reader can tell that they will be tragic, especially for
Liesel. “Yes, it was a great night to be Liesel Meminger, and the calm, the warm, and the soft would remain for approximately three more months. But her story lasts for six.” (Zusak 493).
Could it be destruction of Himmel Street, death, or anything in between? For now, the reader does not know. However, whatever Death has hinted in the closing paragraphs of part nine, the events will be big and tragic for Liesel Meminger.
