Lakshmi has had many emotions throughout the book but two of the main emotions are anger and proudness. Lakshmi first felt proud when her stepfather told her she would be going to the city to work as a maid. She was excited and knew that her money would greatly help her family. Her mom didn't want her to go but Lakshmi told her that she would be one less mouth to feed and she would make enough money to buy a new roof. Even as Lakshmi left her village and started traveling to the city she was excited. She went through in her head all the things she would buy for her family. Lakshmi felt more grown up and felt like she was actually contributing to her family unlike her stepfather. After she found out what her stepfather had done she was very angry. She was angry because she had trusted him and thought that he was trying to help her family. He did the absolute opposite thing and she felt betrayed. Lakshmi was also angry at the woman who told her to call her Auntie. She though Auntie was going to help her and pay her to be her maid. Instead, Auntie betrayed her just like her stepfather. She likes to write down things about her day and life. She also likes learning about new things. On her way to the city she wrote down words she had heard along the way and was going to ask people what the words meant. The journal would be large and have lines so she could keep it organized. The pencil would be brand new because she feels ashamed of her stub of a pencil she has now. With a new pencil she would be able to write a lot of new information down. I think she would like it because it would give her a chance to let out her feelings. She doesn't really talk to anyone about her feelings so the journal would be somewhere for her to let everything
