“The Bracelet” by Yoshiko Uchida is about a young girl and her family is sent to a camp during WW2. Before leaving for the camp, the young girl Ruri's best friend Laurie showed up to her house and gave her a bracelet. She gave the bracelet to Ruri so Ruri would never forget about her while at the camp. While at the camp, Ruri lost the bracelet that Laurie had given to her. She looked everywhere for it but could not end up finding it. She felt so bad and was in tears. But Ruri’s mom told her that you don’t need an object to remember the ones you love. Readers understand that the article shows that she doesn’t need an object to remember the ones you love and genuine friendships are never forgotten.
In the beginning of the story, Ruri and her family had to pack to leave for the camp they were forced to go to during WW2. Before they left, Ruri’s friend Laurie went to her house to give her something. It was a present. “ She thrust the present at me and told me it was some to take to camp. It’s a bracelet, she said before I could open the package.”(Page 24) During that moment Ruri got emotional. She knew she would miss Laurie while at the camp. But, Ruri felt that if she had this bracelet on while at camp she would never forget about Laurie. This shows that Ruri and Laurie were best friends and cared about each other.

Once they arrived at the camp they settled down where they were staying at. Ruri was saying how she would never ever take off the bracelet Laurie had given her before they had left. “It was a thin gold chain with a heart dangling on it. She helped me put it on, and I told her I’d never take it off, ever.”(Page 24) Ruri knew that if she lost that she would feel so bad. She was so thankful that Laurie had given her a bracelet as well. This shows that Ruri and Laurie had a real friendship and care for each
