After conducting much research, I settled on the source, “Disney Has Done It Again: Father of The Bride II Is Arab-Bashing Redux” by Dr. Jack Shaheen. The main argument of the article is that Arabic people and their culture is being misrepresented by the media and by society through untruthful stereotypes. Additionally, Shaheen claims that Disney and other companies/people are to blame for these stereotypes. This article relates directly to my thesis statement because both Shaheen and I believe that Aladdin is an example of how Disney is using stereotypes and misrepresenting Arabic culture. My thesis combines stereotypes and generalizations into an issue of cultural insensitivity conducted by Disney. I can use Shaheen’s beliefs in order to …show more content…
Firstly, Shaheen himself was a very successful individual. He has two graduate degrees which labels him as a scholar. He dedicated his life to addressing the misrepresentation of Arabs and Muslims as well as bashing cultural stereotypes of the same people. Because Shaheen devoted his life to understanding and discrediting Arabic stereotypes, he has a great deal of understanding of the topic. Because of his expertise and extensive knowledge, Shaheen is quite credible. Second, the source is published in the magazine “The Washington Report on Middle East Affairs”. As the title of the magazine clearly states, the focus is on Middle Eastern affairs. After researching this magazine, it came to my attention that this magazine is published just eight times per year. Having been around since the 1990s, WRMEA’s expertise is quite clear. Because the magazine is only posted several times a year and because this company has been publishing for almost thirty years, the WRMEA becomes quite credible due to their expertise and persistence on this topic. This company would not allow an author such as Shaheen to publish an article unless the person writing said article was credible to begin with. Likewise, Shaheen would not dedicate his time in writing an article for a magazine which he did not deem credible. Additionally, the magazine will have been peer reviewed before publication which makes this source every more …show more content…
Because we are so similar, our arguments will go hand in hand. This source offers a lot to my argument because my argument falls flat without credible support backing me up. Before this research, all I had was a claim. However, because Shaheen is pulling examples from Aladdin which pick apart the blatant racism found in the film, my claim has more of a basis for even being said at all. Additionally, my claim now has supporting evidence in order to reference somebody who is an expert in the field of speaking out about Arabic stereotypes. Because he is an expert like explained earlier, my argument aligns with the thinking of an expert which proves it to be a strong argument and a credible one. Overall, Shaheen’s article will be used to add a sense of credibility and basis for my argument to be made in the first place which will solidify my thesis statement and build the foundations for the argument overall. This will strengthen my argument as much as possible with the given research I could find online. Overall, Shaheen’s source will prove to be very useful when supporting my argument. Because the main argument of the source aligns with my thesis and that the source proves to be credible, my MA4’s claims should become much
