Blood Wedding was a play about a young couple that arranges a marriage due to the amount of money the Bridegroom had. Although the Bridegroom had been delighted with the marriage, the Bride was a bit miserable. The Bride was forced to marry a man whom she did not love, while she sat around watch the man she did love be with another woman. Towards the end of the play, the Bride and her true love, Leonardo, decided to run away into the woods where the last words were spoken. The Bridegroom eventually went after them with his men in order to find the bride and kill Leonardo. After the fight in the woods, the Bride went back to her mother in law and announced her tragedy. The author, being Garcia Lorca, originally wrote the play in spain while spain was dealing with many social justice problems. Lorca's reason for writing the pla was an outcry to feminism. In spain at the time, women lacked many civil rights, the could not do much on their own such as voting, divorcing and much more outside of house work and being a mother. In the play, the bride was not given a choice whether she wanted to marry the bridegroom or not and instead she was forced. The bride was also not allowed to divorce her soon to be husband either way, therefore, she was stuck in a marriage she did not want. For example, in the beginning of the play, the mother in law and the wife began to sing and weep about a horse that would go out to the river but would not drink. The horse symbolizes Leonardo because he would take a long journey to the other side where the Bride lives and just watch her, but would not make a move. It could also mean about how stubborn and selfish Leonardo had been, considering the horse refused to drink the water. Another example could be the color of the rooms, the white room symbolizing purity and the yellow room symbolizing wealth. A bull is usually masculine and dangerous therefore symbolizing death and strength.
