This story doesn’t follow a typical books plot structure but instead the author makes each chapter is its own short story and this book is more like a compilation of the different memories of Jason Taylor that all happen within one year.

Chapter 1. January man
We start the novel off with our first character Jason Taylor, who lives in a small village called Black Swan Green in Worcestershire. Jason has been given a very strict rule by his father, “Do not set foot in my office”.
Jason broke that rule by picking up the phone that was ringing in his father’s office for some time, later in the chapter we meet Jason’s sister

Chapter 2. Hangman
Jason tells us more about his stuttering and how bad he struggles with it. He says that it’s more of a mental block as “hangman”. Jason is scared to stand up and speak during the school’s weekly “rhetoric” session. His speech therapist a south African woman named Mrs. De

Chapter 3. Relatives
This chapter brings in a new character, Jason’s cousin Hugo Lamb. Hugo tries to get Jason to smoke a cigarette. This is Jason’s first time ever trying a cigarette also so he doesn’t take it as well as Hugo.

Chapter 4. Bridle path
A fight breaks out between Grant Burch “The bully” and Ross wilcox ,
Burch breaks his wrist during the fight. After the fight Jason meets with
Dawn Madden ( the girl he likes ). And treats Jason like a “dog”. Jason ran from her, he climbed a tree. As he was in the tree he could see Tom
Yew on his way to the navy, but stops to see Debby Crombie and they make love…

Maggot
2 kids see Jason and his mom go to the cinema, Ross Wilcox and Gary
Drake were the kids, they started to make fun of Jason for even going in there, Ross used a word that is meant to be offensive where they are from “maggot”. The name that he gave Jason started to stick so everyone in school called him “maggot”.

Chapter 10. Knife grinder
A knife grinder visits Jason’s home. Jason didn’t want to let the man in, later in the chapter Jason and his dad go to a village meeting to decide what to do about a “proposed gypsy encampment”. Some speeches go by and suddenly the fire alarm gets pulled causing some panic. Jake’s friend’s dad tells Jason that his grandfather was a gypsy to,

Chapter 11. Goose fair
Jason finds Ross Wilcox’s long-lost wallet, which just happened to have
“six hundred pounds” at the fair. While at the fair Jason gets confronted by a few people about the wallet, Jason decides that maybe he shouldn’t have it any more, so he gives it back. Later in the chapter we see Ross break up with Dawn Madden and finds her sleeping with
Grant Burch. Ross was so in shock that he took Tom’s Suzuki bike and crashes it and rips part of his leg off.
