Having low self-esteem is like having a disease. “You may feel pressured to look a certain way because the way you look doesn’t make you feel good enough” (Taylor). Sometimes girls think that they need to be a certain way to satisfy others, but in reality, they just need to satisfy themselves. Being teased at school can lead to low self-esteem, not speaking up for themselves, and suicide.
“Being a teenager is difficult enough without having to worry about bullying”. In Mrs. Lohmann’s and Taylor’s book, “The Bullying Workbook for Teens”, they talk about many ways to help people, who have low self-esteem, boost themselves back up. Keys was interviewed April 12th, 2010 and was asked “So many of your songs are about female empowerment. Do you consider yourself a role model for young women?” She stated, “ I do. We all have the ability to affect someone in a positive way. And one thing I’ve found from the very beginning is that thoughts are real. So I really want to give people something empowering to think about and live for” (Time, vol. 175, no. 14). Not only do young people get bullied but celebrities do as well. The reporter also asked Alicia Keys, “I hear some Prince influences in your new work. Is that the case?” She then stated that she has “always been very inspired by Prince. I’m sure people told him that he was a black musician and can’t play that” (Time, vol. 175, no. 14).
There are some cases where it is too late to help someone cope with their low self-esteem. Suicide can be preventable but it takes time. “Suicide is among the top three causes of death for young people ages 15 to 24” (Goldsmith). Not only does suicide kill you but you hurt your loved ones very much. As Passenger once said, “Well you only need the light when it's burning low, you only miss the sun when it starts to snow, you only know you love her when you let her go”.
Suicide doesn't just affect the ages 15 to 24. “Suicide touches people of all ages”
