Bradbury revisits what we know about time travel with the concept of the butterfly effect theory in “A Sound of Thunder.” The story begins with an agency that provides time travel services taking a group of wealthy men dinosaur hunting in a prehistoric setting. Eckles, the main character of the story, wants to hunt a Tyrannosaurus Rex. The time travel agency has extremely strict rules for the past. TE travel guide repeats the most important rule: to stay on the designated path or else they will be banned. If the men stray from the path, the agency implies severe consequences for their actions to their future. When the group finally finds the T-rex, Eckels freezes up and is too frightened to shoot it. When they arrive back at their present, Eckels notices that the world feels different and the facility’s signs are strangely written. The group finds that everything has been changed in their present reality, and a different president had been put in power who is a totalitarian anti-everything ruler. The actions of only one man straying from the path and killing one butterfly had now led to the assumed suffering of millions under this new leader. Eckels looks at the dirt on his boots that came from stepping off the path and sees a golden butterfly he stepped on. This seems to symbolize the butterfly effect and reinforces how the small mistake caused significant repercussions. Eckels chose to be selfish instead of virtuous, which caused him to prevent people in his society from flourishing as Aristotle described. As I have mentioned, Eckles’ actions are inherently immoral because he did not consider the consequences of his actions although they were unintentional mistakes. Aristotle’s virtue ethics apply to how to be, not what to do - something that Eckles should have already considered before taking actions that could hurt others out of pure greed and
