It happens time after time again. And it happens again, too. In the ninth book of A Series of Unfortunate Events, The Carnivorous Carnival, by Lemony Snicket (Daniel Handler), misfortune and misery strikes the Baudelaire orphans again after their parents have died in an incredibly tragic fire. Violet, Klaus, and Sunny Baudelaire find themselves at the Caligari Carnival. A carnival is supposed to be a fun place for entertainment, right? Well, if it’s the Caligari Carnival, then the answer would be wrong. Violet, Klaus, and Sunny are eager to learn the meaning of V.F.D., a secret organization that’s located up in the Mortmain Mountains, where they believe that one of their parents that might have survived the fire that burned their home is hiding. To see if the Baudelaire children could find answers to their questions, they visited the library inside Madame Lulu’s tent, only to learn that Madame Lulu is a fake. The kids realized that no light was shining in the tent and used an invention to make her tent appear as if it’s magical. Violet says, “She’s a fake, all right. I bet that crystal ball is just plain glass. She tricks Count Olaf into thinking she’s a fortune-teller, so he’ll buy her things like lions and new turbans.” (Snicket, p. 133). When Madame Lulu entered the tent, she was very mad to see the crystal ball broken and the freaks inside. However, the Baudelaires shouted at the fake fortune teller and told her that they discovered she’s not really a fortune teller. Madame Lulu revealed that she isn’t whom she portrays herself as, and her real name is Olivia. The Baudelaires were shocked to hear that Olivia was helping Count Olaf succeed. Violet suddenly asked Olivia, “But where …show more content…

To attract people to Caligari Carnival, the villain thought it would be amusing and entertaining to watch one of the freaks jump or be pushed into the pit and fed to the starving lions. A news reporter from the local newspaper, The Daily Punctilio, showed up to spread the news of Caligari Carnival’s latest attraction. Olaf announced, “I’ll lead the way to the pit. After all, the lion show was my idea, so I should get to walk in front.” (Snicket, p. 214). He excitedly led the disguised Baudelaire kids to the pit for the choosing ceremony, which would determine the freaks fed to the tough predators. Olivia, who was disguised as Madame Lulu, looked after the children in the area of the pit, which was surrounded by a large crowd. Count Olaf, who’s disguised as a ringmaster, shouts at the audience, “Welcome, ladies and gentlemen, to the most exciting afternoon of your entire life (which I find to be the most horrifying afternoon, rather than exciting)!” (Snicket, p. 220). Once the freaks were introduced, starting with Hugo and ending with Chabo the wolf baby (who was really Sunny), Count Olaf drew a small piece
