Witchcraft hysteria could be caused by many things such as hallucinations or halloween, but in this case it was just a bunch of mean girls who got caught up in a lie. In Salem Massachusetts, 1692 there were problems with landowners and who got who’s land. Since there were feuds with neighbors, one family ,the Putnuns decided to take into their own hands and claimed that the young girls were being possessed by witches. The girls screamed that the witches would bite and choke them. This all started because the youngest daughter got sick and started to hallucinate. During that time when someone would get very ill and would hallucinate people believed that they were being possessed. This was a very religious period.

They believed that witchcraft was the work of the devil and his worshipers. In the movie the “possessed” young girls reference a big yellow bird flying above the accused or sitting on the accused shoulder. This yellow bird was known as the devil’s familiar. They had also mentioned a yellow dog but I’m not familiar with that story. In this story the girls mostly accused females. There was one man who was hung for being a witch and some other males were accused but eventually set free. There had been 19 hung for witchcraft and one crushed by stones under a wooden

They even began to take the “afflicted” girls to other towns to look for witches. Most of the people who were accused were visited by the sane people in town in hopes to bring them some warmth to this jail chamber that was covered in hair and bugs so they wouldn’t feel as bad as they did. There had bed twenty people killed for witchcraft. Fourteen of them were women, and there were two infant children and five other accused souls had died in prison. These trials were of mass hysteria caused by political drama in the church. In the seventeenth century twelve more women were killed in Massachusetts, and also in Connecticut. In the movie ‘Three Sovereigns for Sarah” the actress who played Sarah tried to prove the accusing girls wrong by speaking the scripture from memory.
