The Cask of Amontillado vs the Masque of The Red Death Who would have thought that “The Cask of Amontillado” and “The Masque of the Red Death” had so many similarities throughout? A small amount distinguishable features are very much present, as well. They seem to both be trying to subtly get the same point across. As the stories progressed, many points were touched upon in similar ways. While some differences between “The Masque of the Red Death” and the “The Cask of Amontillado” are noticeable, the similar aspects are prominent. Both stories share very alike themes and symbols. The overall theme of the stories is human mortality. They touch deeply into death and how humans appear to react to it. Subtly but surely, it hints to readers just how vulnerable humanity is. Poe wrote in the “Masque of the Red Death,” “The scarlet stains upon the body and especially upon the face of the victim, were the pest ban which shut him out from the aid and from the sympathy of his fellow-men,” (Poe 1). Suspense seems to be something that lingers through each story. From the beginning of “The Cask of Amontillado,” the story only grew more and more suspenseful. It all began when Montresor explains to us that he had been insulted and would get revenge. Montresor stated, “The thousand injuries of Fortunato I had borne as I best could, but when he ventured upon insult I vowed revenge,” (Poe 1). Additionally, in “The Masque of the Red Death,” the story had also been suspenseful since the start when we learned about the Red Death and what it had caused. The author explained, “The Red Death had long devastated the country. No pestilence had ever been so fatal, or so hideous,” (Poe 1). You can basically feel and almost touch the suspense especially towards the end when the plot twists
