In The Catcher in the Rye, the author, J.D. Salinger argues, through the use of language, characterization, and symbolism, that the biggest factor that contributed to Holden’s mistrust in adults and his need to protect childhood innocence. Although he was unable to open up about his rough childhood before writing the book, he was able to subtly hint at his past abuse.
