Back in 2016 Colin Kaepernick quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers, controversially protested by taking a knee during the national anthem at a preseason game. This resulted in, a major amount resentment from fans, some even going as far as to burn his jerseys. Is one small act in protest to racism had a large effect leading many other athletes to contribute their support for the cause by kneeing as well. I personally believe, that these athletes are well within their rights. According to the first amendment people have the right to “peacefully assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.”. There are no hostile acts being conducted during these protests. These athletes are standing up to racism by kneeling to a song that represents a society that allows it to transpire.
