In Marilyn Waniek’s, The Century Quilt, Waniek uses reminiscent memories filled with detailed imagery of the connections between her family and her Meema’s blanket to develop her hope and optimism for the future as she creates her “century quilt of memories” with her own family. In the beginning of the poem, Waniek begins with her memories of Meema's Indian Blanket. She speaks in past tense to allow the reader to explore the memories with her. The past tense language like “used to” and “I remembered” almost gives the beginning of the poem a storytelling feel. We get a sense of what the blanket meant to the little girls when Waniek says “I remembered how I’d planned to inherit that blanket.” This “plan to inherit” shows a sense of tradition in the family and allows the reader to understand the importance of the blanket. Rather than the reader discussing a blanket, she states she's now found a quilt. This quilt establishes maturity in this stanza because the tone shifts to more peaceful due to the use of more neutral colors. Waniek mentions the quilt to be brown, white and yellow, these colors having a more mature palette. These colors could also visually represent the colors of her culture and what they mean.
