This decision is not an easy one, as it comes with numerous challenges and worries. These challenges include financial instability, language barriers, stigma, and emotional trauma. One of the most significant challenges that the girl would face if she were to leave the man is financial instability. Throughout the story, readers can infer that the man has been financing the couple’s travels. She would be without a stable source of income and would need to find a way to support herself quickly. Hemingway writes, “‘But what about afterward? What will we do afterward?'” (Hemingway 281). The girl is concerned about their future and recognizes that they need to think beyond the present moment.
