When first reading Anya's Ghost by Vera Brosgo, you may find yourself thinking that the novel is mainly about an evil ghost trying to control Anya's life, however, this novel has more to do with transformation than someone may think. One of the major themes in the book is the transformation that teenagers go through in order to become an adult, and it is conveyed when Anya goes through unpleasant times to be able to and growth and accept her identity and embrace her heritage which is a part of life that everyone goes through before becoming an adult. She also understands what causes harm and what does not. Possibly the biggest influence in the life of Anya is Emily, the ghost, who turns from sweet and caring to mean and terrifying. On pages 6 to 7 we can see a classic example of Anya's backstory, a girl that gets ignored by the popular boy. On page 12, Brosgo uses many thought bubbles to show that Anya's mind is filled with the moment that she saw her crush kissing another girl and the moment that her mother didn't make the healthy breakfast she hoped for. After going for a walk she falls into an abandoned well and gets trapped. While she’s stuck down there she meets a ghost that she unknowingly brings home with her. The spirit starts to help Anya fit in more and hang out with boys, on page 108, we can see that Emily gets into Sean's backpack to find a paper that gives her information about a party that is happening and Anya asks Sean if he is going and also asks him for a ride. In the beginning, Emily seems to be helping Anya fit in and make friends. On page 123, Sean reveals his true personality, he is hiding in a room possibly with another girl and his girlfriend makes sure no one comes in. After that Anya doesn't like sean anymore, however, Emily still insists that she should try and “get rid of the other girl’’ and also tells Anya that she is in love even if she isn't. Anya was a smoker, but after everything she went through she decided to quit smoking despite her friend's skill of being a smoker. I believe that the author shows how tough times can change someone for the better, and how we can learn lessons from bad experiences. Another good new habit that Anya was able to create is asking for help. Dima is the unpopular friend that Anya isn’t proud to see next. When she wanted to find out about the murder of Emily and could not find her way around the Library she asked for help from Dima and she understood that he could be a great help.
