In The Book Thief, Max Vandenburg is an intricately woven character who possesses numerous dissimilar traits, predominantly, Max demonstrates resilience through his creativity, determination, and his anguish. Firstly, despite the many hardships Max faces, he channels his aggression and negative feelings in positive and creative ways. Furthermore, Max uses his ability to write and draw as a method of escaping, and in what could be considered some of Max’s loneliest moments, Max is most creative, such as, when Max writes Liesel the book “The Standover Man” which is about his quite awful life.
