The experiences that one has throughout their life can shape them as a person. Culture, family, environment, and friends all impact people as they grow up, especially as young adults. In the novel, Into the Beautiful North, by Luis Alberto Urrea, the main character, Nayeli, develops from events throughout the story. 19 year old Nayeli shows the most leadership and this is a key factor in the development of her character. Nayeli also has strong relationships with the other characters.

The theme of self growth and isolation can be seen throughout the novel Speak (1999) by Laurie Halse Anderson, which follows the main protagonist, Melinda Sordino through her freshman year. When Melinda is first introduced, she mentions a secret that she is afraid to talk to anyone about. Melinda later reveals to the readers that she was raped by a high school senior at an end of summer party. Everyone at school acts hostile towards Melinda for calling the cops and ruining what was the best night of their lives, unbeknown to them, that night still haunts her dreams. This causes Melinda to become isolated from everyone, as they only see her as the freak who called the cops.

The memoir, From chapter 13: The Diary of Gul Makai, By Malala Yousafzi, is a story about an eleven year old girl named Malala Yousafzi and what she does to fight for her right to Learn. Salva and Malala used determination and strength to overcome their challenges. determination often helped people get through their problems.

The survivor is an archetype for Harry who has overcome trouble and is determined to get the most of his life. He is strong willed.

Bobby faces bullying and self-doubt which causes a journey of self-exploration. Although Bobby Goodspeed was solicitous towards others, he could never inspire himself.
An additional theme that is presented in the book is how courage can help people face fears. People see this when Brian is on a plane and his pilot has a heart attack (page 26). Brian then has to fly the plane but he is frightened to do it. Brian has never flown a plane before, so he is petrified to do it. He is very courageous to face his fear of flying a plane.
To show character change in The Joy Luck Club Tan uses values to stress the importance of winning and losing. The club is a night for the Aunties to come together, to play mah jong, for a night of happiness and pleasure. Although played as a gateway from negativities, there was a reoccurring obstruction causing discontent. Winning or losing in the game built the idea of survival whether it be a game or a real life situation. The Aunties believed in this “...view of the loser as a victim who fails to survive, and belief that one should make every effort to defend oneself against the bruising experience of being a loser” (Xu 10).
