In this book, it discusses Ella Baker and her involvement in the civil rights movement. In one chapter of the book, Chapter 3: Harlem During the 1930s, it touches base on Baker’s involvement in radical activism during the Great Depression. Specifically, Ransby explains how Baker began her involvement in the activist community after she graduated from college and moved to New York City, where she was emerged into an environment with left wing views. In Harlem, she would participate street corner discussions in regards to the black freedom movement and radical visions.
Before this unit, black dancing often differed from whites. First off, many of them seemed more comedic, Josephine Baker from Le Revue Des Revues. Her innovated performance brought her stardom, for she was the first African America international entertainer. She used her whole body in dances, freely moving around. In the 1920s, people deemed her dance ‘savage’ due to the lack of structure and revealing clothes.
“Bernice Bobs Her Hair” is a short story by F. Scott Fitzgerald that reflects on the summer visit of two wealthy cousins in the 20’s. Marjorie is one of the main characters she is one of the more popular girls in town; her cousin Bernice is her cousin who is visiting for the summer, Bernice is bad at almost anything that comes with being social especially keeping a conversation and is socially awkward even though she is pretty she is quit “dopless”. People are partying. The word of money fills in the air. People being miserable everywhere. These events were the daily lifestyle of people living in the 1920’s. The 1920’s was a prosperous time for America after World War I because after the war, the economy raised people’s hopes of being in the upper class.
African Americans viewed the Savoy Ballroom as “luxurious” and “high class” (Heinila 2). However, white Americans did not think that the ballroom was nearly as good as all white ballrooms. The US press criticized the Savoy Ballroom for allowing different forms of dance (Heinila 2). It was made clear that white Americans had a different perspective on the ballroom and did not respect the Savoy Ballroom (Heinila 2-3). In 1940, a group called “The Music Makers of Stage” posted an article which included racist remarks that were targeted at the Savoy Ballroom for allowing a different form of dance (Heinila 5).
It helped people let loose of their emotions and forget about the war and their personal lives for a few minutes. One way that they did this was the development of the swing dance. This dance was very popular and fun. In this style of dancing, people do not stop moving. It’s upbeat and very energetic.
Geographical: The Charleston was originated in an island near Charleston, South Carolina by black people. According to Harry T. Sampson in 1922, the Charleston was performed in the New Amsterdam Theater in New York during the "Ziegfeld Follies" show. This was the first time the Charleston was danced at a show by white people. The Charleston became popular the next year in the Broadway show Runnin' Wild. After this show the Charleston because the most popular dance of the 1920's.

Long after the great Migration, where millions of blacks moved to northern cities to escape Jim Crow, and embrace the new found possibilities offered. During this period African-Americans in New York, collectively gathered in Harlem mainly, it was usually alluded to as the black capital. There blacks shared culturally and also, influenced music greatly. This is also where the "new negro" persona was crafted, blacks were no longer going to be referred to as someone's mammies or boy.
The Great Gatsby had lots of scenes in it that had to deal with jazz. Jazz in the great Gatsby was very full with multiple African Americans in the bar dancing to the music. During that time which was the 1920’s, Jazz was amongst African Americans in New Orleans. The jazz age played a large role in modernizing the United states during the 1920’s with African Americans influencing jazz and the modernization too. This essay will explain more in the jazz age.
African Americans face a struggle with racism which has been present in our country before the Civil War began in 1861. America still faces racism today however, around the 1920’s the daily life of an African American slowly began to improve. Thus, this time period was known by many, as the “Negro Fad” (O’Neill). The quality of life and freedom of African Americans that lived in the United States was constantly evolving and never completely considered ‘equal’. From being enslaved, to fighting for their freedom, African Americans were greatly changing the status quo and beginning to make their mark in the United States.

The 1920s is known for the jazz age also called the roaring twenties. In that time America was undergoing lots of changes economically, socially and culturally. One of the major changes that took place was in the fashion. Fitzgerald in his writing shows not only the fashion but also the clothes symbolizes other too. One of the symbols greatly used in the great Gatsby is the symbolization of clothes, how they represent different things at different times.
