The story takes place at Chicago Lying-in Hospital where a couple was given birth to triplets. In an age where there was no disease and people did not aged, population control was used to sustain the planet balanced out. Edward K. Wehling, Jr waited for his wife in the waited room of the hospital thinking that he had to choose one of his kids and scarify the other two. At the same time this was occurring an old man was painting a mural of the “garden of life”. Leora Duncan enter the hospital looking for the painter because she was going to pose for the mural .She was one of the people who comfort other before dying.
