A Cloud of Oppression Experiencing the torment of a label is difficult, especially if it is given to your whole family. In the memoir Red Scarf Girl, set in the time of the Cultural Revolution, being within the upper middle class was frowned upon and proletarians were seen as the leaders of society. The label of black class status tainted the bourgeoisie, including the Jiang family, with torture, ridicule, and incrimination by others influenced by the governmentally coercive ways of Communism. Political oppression was visible everywhere within China, affecting neighborhoods, families and even children.

In Peggy Orenstein’s book, she effectively argues that a princess-like society immersed in America's culture is damaging to young girls through her interviews, evidence, personal experience, and humorous tone. Starting towards the beginning of her book, Orenstein exposes to the audience that she too liked Disney. She says that "God knows I was a Disney kid. I still have my bona fide mouse ears" (Orenstein 13). By doing this, Orenstein conveys her knowledge of the two sides of her argument: Disney is damaging to young kids or vice versa.
In the chapter, “Boys & Girls”, Sandra Cisneros uses the last sentence to show Esperanza’s inability to fully define herself. When Esperanza is thinking about the difference and separation between boys and girls she says “Until then I am a red balloon, a balloon tied to an anchor. ”(9) This quote is talking about how Esperanza, the balloon, is being held back by Nenny, the anchor, who burdens her because Esperanza thinks she needs to separate from her to define herself. Although Esperanza feels she is weighed down by Nenny, by saying, “Until then”(9) she realizes that she will eventually leave and get past this ‘problem’.

She tells the story of her childhood by intertwining Chinese talk-story and personal experience, filling in the gaps in her memory with assumptions. The Woman Warrior dismantles the archetype of the typical mother-daughter relationship by suggesting that diaspora redefines archetypes by combining conflicting societal norms. A mother’s typical role in a mother-daughter relationship is one of guidance and leadership. Parents are responsible for teaching a child right from wrong and good from evil.
