Did you ever stand up to a bully who is just pure evil and wants power? Archie Costello is one of the main characters in a book called The Chocolate War. He’s super smart, but kind of a show-off. This guy just loves being in charge and bossing people around without even caring about how they feel at all. At Trinity High School, he leads a group called The Vigils. This group has bad people like gangsters and stuff and they want to boss the school, and their job is to give assignments to other students. Archie, who is from Vigils, is really good at making sure everyone does what he says. He even once said, “You’re not supposed to enjoy the assignments,” in the book to show he is giving work, but it’s pretty obvious that he enjoys being in control. …show more content…
He doesn’t even care about selling chocolates or helping the school raise money, he just wants everyone to listen to him, which is just unfair to the other students. He tells everyone, “Everybody sells chocolates at Trinity,” like it’s a rule everyone has to follow. It’s clearly more about power for him than about the actual chocolate. Only a horrible and unloved person would force respect because they can’t deserve it themselves. But then Jerry, who is a student from the same school, refuses to sell the chocolates. This shocks Archie because no one has ever said no to him before, because everyone is scared of him and never talks back. Archie doesn’t like that Jerry is standing up to him and gets angry, which is just part of his personality throughout the book. He thinks to himself, “If you back down, you’re through” showing how scared he is of losing control. He doesn’t want anyone to question him, and Jerry saying no felt like a big threat to him. He worries that if one person goes against him, others might follow, so he decided to act tough. Archie is the type of person who leads through fear instead of
